In order to maximise their contribution to a business, all managers need to have a solid understanding of finance.

The aim of this course is to give managers from a non-financial background the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the basic principles of business finance and to become more confident in addressing matters of a financial nature.

You can expect a contextual analysis of recent financial news and topical subjects relevant to your business as well a better understanding of the role finance should play in future planning and decision making.

Brief Course Overview;

  • Business and finance: The concept of risk and reward, business organisation and role of finance, development and growth of businesses.
  • Understanding financial statements: Users of financial statements, accounting principles and financial reporting, basic book-keeping, Profit & Loss Account, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statements.
  • Financial management: Reading and interpreting financial statements, ratio analysis, break-even analysis, cost accounting, working capital management and cash flow forecasting, gearing and equity and debt financing, finance raising, business valuations.
  • Financial planning: The components of a good business plan, planning process, variance analysis, capital budgeting, role of finance in planning process

CPD Accreditation

About Gerry

A Chartered Accountant and graduate of Queens University Belfast in Economics and Accounting, Gerry joined the Jefferson Smurfit Group Plc in 1983 and was employed in their financial services division in Smurfit Finance and Leasing as Financial Director, helping to establish their venture capital company in the 1990’s. He served for a number of years on the Financial Council of JSG Plc. Since 2000 he has provided training and consultancy services specialising in the area of finance and general management. He is an active member of a number of business organisations including Dublin Chamber of Commerce and the Small Firms Association.

Gerry delivers financial training courses for Irish Times Training since 2000, delivering courses on Finance, Budgeting and Business Planning. He also delivers on the Strategic Financial module on our MSc in Executive Leadership delivered by Ulster University in association with Irish Times Training. Other lecturing roles include the Finance module on the Enterprise Ireland New Frontier programme in Synergy IT Tallaght and LINC IT Blanchardstown. He has also previously and in some cases continues to deliver finance courses and workshop clinics for DBS, NovaUCD, Dundalk IT, Institute of Technology in Blanchardtown and Dun Laoghaire College of Art & Design programmes.
