This course is designed for managers and executives with responsibility for managing budgets, company directors with limited or no financial background. The course is presented in a non-technical fashion to suit you the audience.

Gain a better understanding of the basic principles of business finance and to become more confident in addressing matters of a financial nature.

During this day long intensive workshop accounts and information sheets will be provided along with a contextual analysis of recent financial news and topical subjects.

Course Overview

• Business and finance: The concept of risk and reward, business organisation and role of finance, development and growth of businesses.

• Understanding financial statements: Users of financial statements, accounting principles and financial reporting, basic book-keeping, Profit & Loss Account, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statements.

• Financial management: Reading and interpreting financial statements, ratio analysis, break-even analysis, cost accounting, working capital management and cash flow forecasting, gearing and equity and debt financing, finance raising, business valuations.

• Financial planning: The components of a good business plan, planning process, variance analysis, capital budgeting, role of finance in planning process

In preparation for the course, participants should consider if there are any recurring topics/issues they have with finance that they would like to have a better understanding of.

Key Outcomes

By the end of this two-day course, participants will better understand:

• The role of finance in business

• Commonly used financial terminology

• How to read financial statements

• The role of finance in planning and decision making

Gerry Delaney
Gerry Delaney

Gerry Delaney is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland and a graduate in Economics and Accounting from Queens University Belfast. He trained with a leading international firm of Chartered Accountants in Belfast before joining Ernst & Young in Dublin. In 1983 he joined Jefferson Smurfit Group Plc and held a number of positions in Smurfit Finance & Leasing including that of Finance Director for 13 years. He also served on the Financial Council of JSG Plc during his time there. In 1991 he helped establish the Smurfit Job Creation and Enterprise Fund, a joint venture with Enterprise Ireland to support SME’s and held the position of Director and Company Secretary.

Gerry established Delaney Financial Consultancy in 2000 and has delivered training and mentoring services to various incubation programmes including Enterprise Launch, Synergy EP, NovaUCD, The Linc Centre, Invent DCU, Create and Genesis EPP. In addition, he provides consultancy services to a number of SME’s including early stage start-ups and recently assisted the management team of one of these companies to complete a successful trade sale. In 2007 he established a call centre business which provides outsourced call handling and administration services to SME’s.

Gerry has worked with Irish Times Training since 2002 delivering the finance modules of their Management Development and Finance courses and has assisted in the development of tailored in-company courses for their clients.

In the past he has been a member of various committees in Chartered Accountants Ireland and is currently active in various business lobby and networking groups such as Dublin Chamber and the Institute of Directors.
