Doctors can now advertise
Traditionally doctors have not been able to advertise their services, the restriction was imposed by their own association, the Medical Council. In December 2009 the Competiton authority announced that following discussions with the Medical Council and its recommendation that the restriction be lifted GPs are now free to advertise their services and prices.

AVMSD Implementation
The new EU AudioVisual Media Services Directive was due to come into effect across all 27 EU member states on the 19th December 2009. The EU released a statement on the 21st of December last, stating “two years after the adoption of modernising EU TV rules, removing outdated restrictions on digital TV over the internet, video, on demand and mobile TV, only three countries- Belgium, Romania and Slovakia – have officially notified the European Commission of measures putting them in place, as required under the EU law. Four other countries- Denmark, France, Luxemburg and the UK- have notified the commission of some measures they have taken to put the AVMSD in place. The Directive has been partly put in place by a number of other countries- Austria, Germany, Ireland, Malta and the Netherlands- though they have not notified the Commission.
The Directive allows up to 12 minutes advertising per hour on TV, though Ireland has decided to allow only 10 minutes which it is entitled to do, Spain on the other hand, seems to be flouting the Directive as it proposes to allow 24 minutes per hour on commercial TV.
